Happy National Peach Cobbler Day! Taking place on April 13th, it’s the holiday we didn’t know we needed — a sweet celebration of a classic dessert, made even more delicious by springtime and its fresh, fruity fragrance in the air. Of course, you never need a special reason to enjoy this homestyle treat. But just in case you wanted to mark the occasion, here are some of our favorite ideas.
Celebrate with something sweet
The first (and most delicious) way to celebrate National Peach Cobbler Day is with a trip to Peach Valley Gainesville! Savor a slice of our Housemade Peach Cobbler, a warm and familiar classic. You can also add some vanilla ice cream for an added serving of sweetness. It makes for the perfect year-round comfort: On cool, rainy days, Peach Cobbler warms the soul — and on Florida’s sun-soaked spring days, it underscores the vibrance of our surroundings in a fun, festive way.
A new dessert for a New World
Peach Cobbler is practically part of Southern cooking’s DNA — but where and when did this sweet tradition begin, exactly? We all know the phrase “American as apple pie,” but as it turns out, the “all-American” rep might apply even better to cobbler. The dessert was created by British colonists who, thousands of miles from home, improvised to enjoy their favorite pies and puddings in the New World. For example, in lieu of intricate suet pudding, which called for ingredients and equipment the colonists simply didn’t have, they “cobbled” together desserts with fruit and biscuit dough, cooked to golden-brown goodness on the fire. The surface of these makeshift desserts was rough and uneven, closer to a cobblestone street than smooth pavement. Though it derived from imperfection, of course, we’ve come to see cobbler as pretty perfect anyway — a sweet, richly textured treat that can be whipped together to feed the whole family!
Grow your own way
There’s no better way to celebrate Peach Cobbler Day than with a slice at your local destination for all things peachy. However, you can also begin a sweet journey today by planting your own peach tree and turning it into a delicious cobbler (ready to enjoy in two to four years), or picking up a peach tree from your nearest nursery to jump-start the process. It’s not instant gratification, but it is a fun way to hone your green thumb in the pursuit of peachy goodness.
According to UF/IFAS, several peach varieties grow well in Gainesville and throughout North and North Central Florida — so this could be the beginning of a truly rewarding garden experiment! The peaches you grow can also be used to make DIY scrubs, refreshing sangria, and so much more.
