Eat Like an Astronaut with Peach Valley Café Gainesville

Now through Oct. 31, you can visit Gainesville’s Cade Museum for Creativity & Invention for a truly out-of-this-world glimpse at the moon, Mars and the exciting future of space travel! As we daydream about colonizing the moon and traveling to the mysterious Red Planet, too, it is important to satisfy your appetite for adventure with fuel for a delicious day out—so why not eat as the astronauts do?

Swing by Peach Valley Café Gainesville before or after your trip to the Cade, and take a page out of the astronauts’ cookbook with some of these space favorites! Take a look.

Fresh fruit

Though it may be surprising, fresh fruit is a favorite of many astronauts as they embark upon their spaceflight journeys! Of course, the only caveat is that fresh fruit will soon spoil—so it has to be eaten pretty soon upon leaving Earth, giving astronauts a final taste of homegrown goodness as they exit Earth’s atmosphere. According to NASA, fresh produce is rinsed in chlorine for safety and sanitization before being brought on board. A wide variety of produce has flown into space since the 1980s, with apples being among the first (and favorites) to make the journey!

Leafy veggies

Did you know that a limited amount of leafy greens is grown in space, right aboard the International Space Station? The Vegetable Production System, a.k.a. Veggie, is a space garden that has produced plants like lettuce, Chinese cabbage and more, giving astronauts the opportunity to grow and enjoy fresh food even while away from Earth. While their selection of greens is fairly limited, of course, you can dig into a more colorful spectrum of salads and fresh, protein-packed wraps here at Peach Valley Café Gainesville.

Yogurt

In low-gravity environments found in the International Space Station and beyond, it is especially important for astronauts to maintain bone health with the help of nutrients such as calcium. This is part of what makes yogurt such an important go-to food for space travelers!

Comfort food

While the astronauts don’t have access to the array of soothing comfort foods that you’ll find here at Peach Valley Café Gainesville—like gooey brownies, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Grits and more—it is important for them to have familiar flavors from home (or as close to it as possible, with space-friendly versions of popular meals like mac & cheese or chocolate pudding). These items don’t only help keep astronauts fed and fueled, but help boost morale and make them feel a little more down-to-Earth when they’re, of course, anything but.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this peek at the astronaut appetite! Of course, back down on Earth, your favorite flavors are easy to savor every day. Swing by Peach Valley Café Gainesville today to dig in.
